Relaxing Weekend in Matheran

Mumbai is a hot mess this year, with the heat reaching its peak, the humid climate and the crowded trains and traffic jams. I love Mumbai for many things and would never consider running away from it but this weekend, me and my friend decided to leave for some cooler destination where we can chill and relax. As the plan was only for the weekend, we had to choose the nearest spot. We chose Matheran, as it takes only couple hours to reach there and also it quite easy to travel as we have many options to reach there. I have been to this hill station many times but only during or post monsoons, looking for lush green mountains and enjoying the view from hilltops. We started our journey  in Neral after  two hours of train ride from C.S.T  to Neral, soaked up and thirsty. We bought some chilled water, freshly cut cucumber and raw mango slices and went for the sharing van ride up to the hill. Finally, the temperature started to drop.

Entering Matheran

Once you reach near the gate Matheran, vehicles are not allowed. One has to park their cars/ bikes and then continue the rest of the journey to the hill walking. It’s around 3 to 4 km hike and take almost an hour or so to reach. Meanwhile, if you’re not a hiking or trekking person, one can opt for hand-rikshaw ride or horse rides at the bargained price. This reminds me of the beautiful horses we saw, there were same numbers of horses as the tourists.

I fell in love with this horse

We decided to skip all the listed spots and thought to just roam around the main market. We ate all the street food we possibly could. Steamed buttered corn, couple kala khatta gola, Masala Maggi, Roasted Nuts, Pani Puri, berries, raw mango slices and the list goes on.

“Karvanda” One of the childhood sweet treats

Raw Mango slices, Superb blend of sweet and sour.

The famous leather shops gave us the chance for window shopping (my friend is anti-fur/leather and I am still using the purse I bought from here when I last visited) for some really cool and stylish bags and other items.

the moments I enjoyed- Lonely Road!

The hotel we stayed was located in the interiors of the forest, which gave us the fantastic views of the trees, creepers, variety of birds and of course monkeys.

Away from the touristy crowd and the main market we had what we wanted; a relaxing cooler weekend.
